Richmond investigates behaviour of Ben Cousins and teammates in Sydney hotel

THE playing future of Ben Cousins at Richmond is under a cloud after confirmation that he was among a group of players on a drunken escapade at the team hotel in Sydney during the early hours of yesterday morning.

Richmond has begun investigating Cousins and a number of other players over their behaviour only hours after the Tigers' 55-point loss to the Swans at the SCG.

Richmond has informed the AFL of its investigation. Under the league's code of conduct, clubs are required to keep the AFL informed but handle discipline internally.

Witnesses have told The Australian that Cousins was part of a group "yahooing" in the Intercontinental Hotel at 3am, waking competitors from around the world who were due to take part in the opening round of the World Triathlon Championship series.

It was held in Sydney yesterday, with the men's event beginning at 7am.

Richmond will seek footage from hotel security cameras and interview hotel staff, although the hotel last night claimed no official complaints had been made.

"The club is investigating a possible incident during the early hours of Sunday morning," a Richmond spokesperson told The Australian last night.

One hotel guest who did not want to be named claimed he attempted to tell the unruly mob to shut up.

"It says a fair bit about where Richmond is at the moment," the guest said.

The Tigers have lost their opening three matches by a total of 183 points and sit firmly on the bottom of the ladder.

There have been claims that Richmond has been covering up bouts of excessive drinking by the recovering drug addict this year. Cousins was hospitalised twice in a week shortly before the start of the season with what the club claimed was a gastric problem.

At the club's official dinner before the opening round against Carlton, president Gary March denied reports Cousins has a problem with binge drinking.

March slammed the claims as "unsubstantiated rumour and innuendo" although he conceded that Cousins was "no angel" and came to the club "with baggage".

Last week, high-profile AFL player manager Ricky Olarenshaw, a former Essendon premiership player, told Melbourne radio that he heard Cousins "will step away from the game".

"We know that he was in hospital about two weeks ago and there have been a lot of sightings of him out and about with his behaviour a little bit erratic," said Olarenshaw, who also has Richmond midfielder Daniel Jackson as part of his stable.

"He's been out with his shirt off and this sort of thing and it's sad."

Richmond chief executive Brendon Gale denied the claims.

"It is a well-known fact that as a part of his condition of employment, Ben is drug-tested by the AFL up to three times a week," Gale said last week.

"We get these rumours and speculation on a daily basis relating to Ben."

Cousins played the first round against Carlton, was ruled out for the second round against the Bulldogs with what the club claimed was a knee injury and returned to the side for Saturday night's game.

Cousins, 31, was thrown a lifeline by the Tigers two years ago after the Brownlow Medallist and premiership player was eventually forced out of West Coast in disgrace because of his long-running drug addition.

He is only a shadow of the player who was regularly named as an all-Australia during his time at West Coast and his career is heading in the same direction as Richmond, which threatens to become the first team to have a winless season since Fitzroy in 1964.

The Tigers meet reigning wooden-spooner Melbourne at the MCG next Sunday in what was shaping as the battle for the paddle. However the Demons claimed their first victory of the year yesterday, beating Adelaide at the MCG by 16 points a week after losing to Collingwood by a point in round two.

Cousins among four suspended by Tigers

FOUR Richmond players, including star Ben Cousins, have been suspended for inappropriate behaviour after a club investigation into a late-night incident in a Sydney hotel on Saturday night.

Young defender Daniel Connors, who admitted to engaging in "unsociable behaviour" and being intoxicated, has been hit hardest with an eight-week suspension that includes a six-week ban from training at the club.

He will also attend weekly alcohol counselling sessions for an indefinite period.

Cousins, Luke McGuane and Dean Polo have been suspended for a one week after the incident, in which guests staying at the Intercontinental Hotel in Sydney's CBD were reportedly woken around 3am by the quartet's antics. The club said none of the three players were drunk.

The incident followed Richmond's 55-point loss to the Sydney Swans, leaving the Tigers winless after three rounds and facing a resurgent Melbourne without a number of key players.

In a statement released on Monday afternoon, Connors said the suspension handed down by club officials and the leadership group was "a massive wake-up call".

"I am extremely disappointed in my actions and I regret the stupid decisions I made on the night. I apologise to all Richmond members and supporters, my team mates, club officials and the guests at the Intercontinental Hotel, who were subjected to my behaviour," he said.

“Over the next few weeks I will be doing everything I can to win back the respect of those who I have let down.

“This has been a massive wake up call for me and I accept that I have a problem with alcohol which I need to address."

Richmond general manager Craig Cameron said the club would not tolerate such breaches of discipline.

“These actions go against all the values that we set for ourselves as a club,” he said,

Tigers CEO Brendon Gale said every Richmond player needed to understand the responsibility of wearing the club's jumper.

Eskimo Joe offer Dockers a new song

Could Fremantle's much maligned club song finally be about to get a facelift?

Local boys turned international stars Eskimo Joe were today announced as the Dockers' new number one ticket holders, giving the club an injection of cool to go with the confidence gleaned from their stellar start.

Vocalist Kav Temperley, drummer Joel Quartermain and guitarist Stuart MacLeod were given the VIP treatment by Matthew Pavlich this morning, and in return the band offered to do the same to the club's theme song.

"We would be happy to write Freo a song, we will take on that challenge. That would be amazing, to write a song that the guys used and sung after every win," Quartermain said.

"We are back here this winter writing for our next record, so while we are at it ...

"The (current one) you love to hear it at the end of a game when they have a win. But it is not on high rotation on the car stereo."

Having formed in East Fremantle in 1997, Eskimo Joe have gone on to conquer Australian music, winning eight ARIA awards – with singles including Black Fingernails, Red Wine huge hits across the world.

In the past they have also had their song From The Sea used in West Coast Eagles marketing. Quartermain said causing a little bit of friction between the two clubs was all part of the game.

"We like causing controversy, we are a rock band. That is what we are about," Quartermain said.

"It is an emotional rollercoaster following Freo, and it is all coming together this year it seems, and they are in fighting fit form."

The Eagles' musical backing has now switched to fellow WA rockers Gyroscope, with their single Some of the Places I Know to be used in the Eagles' TV ads all this season.

Fremantle stalwart Luke McPharlin – himself a keen musician and singer away from football – said he hoped the band would spread the Dockers gospel far and wide.

"If Kav can wear a Freo scarf to a couple of gigs in Europe then that is spreading the message," McPharlin said.

"They are coming to a few games, and hopefully they can come to the rooms and get a few songs going to warm us up."

Don't touch our bird

COLLINGWOOD is angered by a Port Adelaide scheme to put a magpie on the front of the Power jumper.

The Herald Sun can reveal Port Adelaide is taking steps to add a magpie logo to its strip for the Round 10 home game against Richmond as part of the club's 140th year celebrations.

Under a plan put to the AFL, the Power and struggling SANFL club Port Adelaide Magpies will wear the logo on the right breast of their jumpers.

The one-off strip will then be sold in a joint fundraiser for both clubs.

But Collingwood president Eddie McGuire said he was getting fed up with the Power's constant attempts at reverting back to its magpie roots.

"We're conscious of their tradition and their old links, but there needs to be a day where once and for all they are Port Power and we move on," McGuire said.

"We're sick of them, every other five minutes, doing this type of thing. But if they want to ring us, have a chat ... rather than going to the AFL and causing trouble, then they should do so."

Port Adelaide and Collingwood clashed in 2007 when the Power tried, unsuccessfully, to wear their black-and-white striped jumper in a heritage round game in Melbourne against the Western Bulldogs.

"I think Port have actually got to get over all this stuff with their identity," McGuire said.

"We're conscious of people's history, but they were the Cockledivers in the early days, not the magpies, so if they're going to celebrate what they did 140 years ago maybe they should wear that.

"It shouldn't be a big deal, but again, we get a bit tired of Port Adelaide trying to slip behind the scenes on these things."

McGuire said Port Adelaide would get nowhere in its bid to wear the magpie logo without approval from Collingwood.

"The magpie is actually registered to the Collingwood Football Club. The AFL would have to come to us anyway," he said.

"We're not going to dig in the ditch over these things, but at the same time, how many times can you do the same thing? There is a trademark in the AFL of a magpie that belongs to Collingwood."

Port Adelaide said the idea for the magpie logo was as much about helping its SANFL cousins as it was about celebrating 140 years in football.

The Port Adelaide Magpies are in serious financial trouble and remain in danger of folding.

"We're doing everything we can in terms of pushing the boundaries of what we are and aren't allowed to do to help them," Power communications manager Geoff Dodd said.

"We share the same history and we'll be sharing the profits from the sale of these one-off jumpers with the magpies, so it's another way to help them."

Asked if he anticipated a Collingwood backlash, Dodd said: "We'll see what the AFL has to say. They are certainly aware of what we want to do."
